Election day is an important even in some country. It is the day where the people will decide who will lead in the term as their president. Just recently, Obama has been re-elected for another term as the President of the United States. Here are some interesting election facts in the U.S

  • The first president of the United States was George Washington which took place on 1789 with only 10 states out of 13 participated.
  • The presidential election is held every four years.
  • In case that no presidential candidate receives a majority of electoral votes, the House Representatives decides who will be the next President of the United States. This only happened twice when Thomas Jefferson won in 1800 and John Quincy Adams in 1824.
  • Before, whoever gets the second highest vote automatically becomes the Vice-President of the United States prior to the 12th Amendment of the Constitution in 1804.
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected four times as the President. After he died, the Amendment to the Constitution was changed, limiting the U.S presidents to only 2 terms in the office.
  • The oldest President elected was Ronald Reagan at age 69 and the youngest was John Kennedy at age 43.
  • On September 26 1960, the first general election presidential debate was held between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.
  • The election was traditionally held on Tuesday after the first Monday of November since it’s the most convenient time for farmers to travel to the county seat and most of their harvest chores are finished.
  • Barack Obama was the first African American candidate in the 2008 election. He was also the first African American president in the history of the United States.
  • On the 2008 presidential election, the two presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama were the only 2 candidate born outside the U.S continental. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone  which is a U.S naval base.
